Abstract
Multi-agent systems (MAS) are no longer a pure research object, they become more and more popular and successful in commercial applications. This area of Artificial Intelligence, the Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI), where MAS belong to, is highly interdisciplinary and connects ideas from sociology, biology and psychology with computer science.
A special topic of Multiagentsystems is the Swar Intelligence: A huge number of agents with very limited abilities, the so called particles, can be seen as a problem solving system for complex numerical and qualitativ optimization problems.
Swarm Intelligence is motivated by natural species (i.e. ant colonies). These systems try to shift intelligence from single particles to the whole group using a network of interactions to produce emergent behaviour. In this area we concentrate onto different aspects, i.e. coordinated generation of structures and automatical creation of hierarchies.
