Research

Most of my current research interest centers around architectures and protocols for mobile and wireless networking; I have a background in distributed and parallel computing, especially regarding fault-tolerance and real-time aspects. Specifically, I am curious about three main topic areas:
  • Architectures for future wide-area mobile networks, based on Internet paradigms, including issues like congestion control in such networks
  • Wireless sensor networks; the characterization of various kinds of tradeoffs in such networks (book on WSN)
  • Cross-layer optimization; for example with regard to matching application and wireless channel dynamics
I have participated in various roles in a number of different research projects founded by the European commision, BMBF, DFG, and industry (in particular, Siemens, Ericsson, DoCoMo EuroLabs, and Mircosoft Research).

Teaching

I am responsible for the teaching activities of the research group Computer Networks. In particular, I am teaching classes on
  • Computer Networks (introduction)
  • Performance evaluation by simulation
  • Mobile communication
  • Seminar on computer networks
  • Ad hoc & sensor networks
  • Konzepte und Methoden der Systemsoftware
  • Project groups on various topics.

CV

I was co-organizer of the 1st European Workshop on Wireless Sensor Networks, which took place in January 2004 in Berlin; I am currently vice-chair of WiOpt 2005. I have served or am serving on the program committees of  Mobiquitous 2005 (Networking Track), ConWIN 2005, PerSEns 2005, VTC Spring 2005 Mobile Networks Symposium, the MobiSys 2005 Workshop on ``Building End-to-end Sensor- and Actuator-Enabled Systems, Applications and Services'', HWISE 2005, WOWMOM 2005, WONS 2005, ICC Wireless Networking Symp. 2005, EWSN 2005, ISSNIP 2004, MASS 2004, Globecom 2004, Med-Hoc-Net 2004, EWSN 2004 & 2005, EMNetS-I, BaseNets 2004, WLN 2004, and others.

I am also a member of the editorial board of the Elsevier Pervasive and Movile Computing  journal, was on the board of Elsevier Ad hoc Networks, and was chair of the Wireless Worlds Research Forum's working group 3 on "Cooperating and ad hoc networks."

I am a member of IEEE, ACM, GI, and KuVS. I was speaker of the working group 7 "Low-power broadband wireless communication" of the Arbeitsgruppe Mobikom of the DLR/BMBF.
